The Three Easy Steps to Decking Care (Clean, Restore, Protect)
It’s that time of year where your deck gets worn with the sun’s heat and foot traffic. Maintaining your deck may be intimidating at first, but it can actually all be narrowed down to three fundamental steps:
- Cleaning Your Deck
- Restoring Your Deck
- Protecting Your Deck
- Clean your deck
You might be wondering where to start when it comes to cleaning your deck. Start with buying a quality deck cleaner and fungicide (like the one you use for the garden) from DIY Depot. Before you use the deck cleaner, start with getting rid of algae, moss, or other forms of fungal growth using the fungicide. You can use a bit of insecticide to remove any pets that might be living under your deck.
Get your deck cleaner ready and make sure to read the instructions on the bottle beforehand. Apply the deck cleaning solution directly to the deck boards with a brush (or what’s indicated on the product) and start scrubbing thoroughly. Make sure that you cover all areas of your deck so the final result will be even. After you scrub the boards, allow the solution to work its magic for as long as the label indicates.
The last step is rinsing down the whole deck surface, using a hosepipe, to remove the cleaner and anything else that might have been left on.
- Restore your Deck
If you have neglected deck maintenance for a while, you might have to invest in a deck restorer, rather than a deck cleaner. You can opt for decking oil or a stain for treated wood decking (if this is your case).
To restore your deck, after cleaning the deck, apply the restorer across your deck. Use a brush for this step, but make sure that you follow the instructions on your product. Make sure that the restorer penetrates into your deck so you can enjoy the best results. Scrubbing thoroughly will help you to achieve this. Wait a while so that the restorer can sink in to the wood.
Wash the surface with a lot of water using a hosepipe. Wait at least two days for the surface to dry entirely before staining the deck.
- Protect your Deck
When you’re ready to start staining, there are three main elements that can help you get the job done like a pro:
- High-Quality Stain
- Long Polled Paint Roller
- Paint Brush
We recommend that you clean your deck two times every year to keep it in a healthy state.
