Eco Tips: Three easy steps to get into the recycling cycle

Step 1

Recycling may seem like a daunting task to undertake, but recycling is easy, fun and rewarding. Read our 3 step guide to become a beginner in recycling.

What can you recycle?

  1. Glass
  2. Plastic
  3. Paper
  4. Metal
  5. Biodegradable food waste

Start out with a one-week challenge by separating your rubbish into 5 different sections: paper, glass, plastic and metal. Rinse all items to prevent mold from developing.

Step 2

How to recycle?
To start you would need to find out what recycling options are available in your area and what items are accepted. Once you have done some research you need to look at how you are able to get your recycling items to their designation points.

  • Option 1
Private companies run curbside collection services, find out if this service is available in your area. Be aware that these services are not free and require a monthly fee.
  • Option 2
Your second option would be to source a local drop-off point or buy-back centre in your area. Be sure to research what material they collect.
  • Option 3
In certain areas you will find bin-pickers and informal recyclers who will do the job for you. Have a look around your area to find out if there are any bin-pickers operating in your surroundings.

Step 3
Solving the storage problem. Once you have done the one-week challenge you will have a good estimation of how much you collect and researched your local recycling options. You can now decide on your storage solution. Answer the following questions to establish your storage needs:

  1. Where would you store the recycling bins?
  2. Will you have the space for multiple bins in the designated area?
  3. How many and what size bins will you need?
  4. How long will you need to store it for? (Some collections come once every 2 weeks)
  5. Will the bins fit in your car for drop-off?
