How to Fix a Dripping Tap in 5 Easy Steps
Dripping taps and faucets are one of the most common household plumbing issues. Ignoring them will result in water damage and a huge amount of water loss – which can be costly. If you have the right tools, the repair is easy to do. This blog post is for all of you who wish to fix this maintenance issue on your own.
Before diving straight in, it is important to identify the type of tap you will be fixing as well as the tools you’ll need for the job!
Types of taps
Traditional taps – In traditional types of water taps, the dripping is a result of a damaged washer that needs to be replaced.
Monobloc lever taps – In a Monobloc tap, leaking is a result of a damaged ceramic cartridge which should also be replaced.
Tools you’ll need
An adjustable spanner;
A cross-headed screwdriver;
Replacement cartridge;
Lubricant.

STEP 1 – Turn off the water supply
Turn off the water supply from the mainline to avoid any further mess or damage.
STEP 2 – Remove the knobs.
Remove the taps decorative parts (handles, etc) from the knob using a flat-head screwdriver.
STEP 3 – Remove the stem.
Unscrew and remove the faucet handle from the stem – using lubricants can assist in making the process easier. Next, loosen the packing nut with a spanner and remove the stem. It is important to note that some stems will pop out, whilst others will need to be twisted off from the valve. This is all dependant on the type of faucet you are working with.
STEP 4 – Check for any damage.
Inspect all the parts and replace them if you spot any signs of damage. If the parts are not damaged, however, inspect the O-ring and the washer. Loosened or damaged washer and O-rings can also cause leakage, and will need replacing.
STEP 5 – Re-assemble and test the tap.
Once all the parts have been reassembled, test the tap to see that it is working properly.
