Make Your Own Birdfeeder This Summer

Looking to bring a bit of nature into your garden this summer? Why not try your hand at making a DIY birdfeeder? It’s a fun, easy project that adds charm to your outdoor space while attracting local wildlife. Plus, with DIY Depot’s tools and supplies, you’ll have everything you need to get started!

Materials:

  • A small wooden plank (20cm x 20cm)
  • Wooden dowels or an old wooden spoon
  • A sturdy piece of rope or twine
  • Nails and a hammer, or a cordless drill with screws
  • Sandpaper
  • Outdoor wood paint or sealant
  • Birdseed

Step 1: Prepare Your Base –  Start with a wooden plank as the base for your birdfeeder. Smooth down any rough edges using sandpaper for a safe, clean finish. If you’re using an old wooden spoon, cut the handle to size for a perch.

Step 2: Attach the Perch – Drill a small hole into the plank, just big enough for your dowel or spoon handle. Insert and secure it with wood glue or a screw from underneath. This gives your feathered friends a perfect perch!

Step 3: Add the Hanging Rope – Drill two small holes near the top corners of your base. Thread through a piece of twine or rope and tie it securely in place. This will be your hanger for the birdfeeder.

Step 4: Paint and Protect – Give your birdfeeder a personal touch with a coat of outdoor paint. Choose bright colours or natural tones, but ensure the paint is safe for outdoor use. Once painted, apply a sealant to protect it from the elements.

Step 5: Fill and Hang – Once everything is dry, fill your birdfeeder with birdseed and find a lovely spot to hang it in your garden. Sit back and watch as the birds flock to their new dining destination!
