Spring Is Around the Corner – Time to Give Your Garden a Fresh Start!
As the days get longer and the air a little warmer, it’s the perfect time to roll up your sleeves and breathe new life into your garden. Whether you’re a seasoned green thumb or just someone who enjoys a tidy outdoor space, prepping your garden beds now will set the stage for a blooming success later in the season.
Why Start Now?
Early spring is ideal for groundwork. Your soil is starting to wake up after winter, and giving it a boost now will mean stronger plants, better yields, and less hassle later on. It’s all about building the right foundation.
1. Clear the Decks
Start by tidying up your beds:
- Remove any dead leaves, weeds, or old mulch.
- Cut back perennials and ornamental grasses.
- Rake the soil lightly to break up the surface.
DIY Depot Tip: Use a hand fork and a good-quality garden rake to avoid compacting the soil too much.
2. Feed the Soil
Good soil = good plants. Now’s the time to enrich it.
What to add:
- Compost: Adds organic matter and improves structure.
- Bonemeal: A slow-release source of phosphorus for strong root growth.
- Organic fertiliser: Feeds soil microbes and boosts overall fertility.
Mix it in with a garden fork about 15–20cm deep. Don’t just sprinkle on the top—get it in where roots will grow!
3. Test Your Soil (Optional but Brilliant)
If you’re serious about garden health, test your soil pH and nutrient levels. It helps tailor your fertiliser choices and plant selection. Kits are available in-store or online.
4. Mulch Magic
Once you’ve fed your soil, top it off with mulch to:
- Keep moisture in
- Suppress weeds
- Regulate soil temperature
Choose bark, composted leaves, or straw depending on the look and function you want.
5. Plan Ahead
With your beds sorted, now’s the time to plan your planting:
- Rotate crops if you’re growing veg.
- Sketch out where your flowers or shrubs will go.
- Consider companion planting to naturally repel pests.
Whether you’re growing blooms, herbs, or salad greens, your future self will thank you for prepping early.
