Step-by-Step: How to Build Your Own Wooden Crates
Step 1: Plan Your Size
Decide on the size of your crate. A common size is around 500mm (L) x 300mm (W) x 250mm (H), but you can scale it to suit your space.
Step 2: Cut Your Timber
Using your measuring tape and saw:
- Cut 2 longer side panels (e.g. 500mm x 250mm)
- Cut 2 shorter side panels (e.g. 300mm x 250mm)
- Cut 2-3 slats for the base (depending on your desired look and support)
Tip: DIY Depot can pre-cut timber for you in some locations—just ask!
Step 3: Assemble the Frame
- Lay out the four side panels and begin by fixing the shorter ends inside the longer ones.
- Use clamps and wood glue to hold panels in place.
- Reinforce with screws or nails for extra strength.
- Check the corners with a carpenter’s square to keep everything straight.
Step 4: Attach the Base
- Flip your crate frame upside down.
- Lay your slats across the bottom and space them evenly.
- Attach them with screws or nails through the frame.
- Optional: use wood filler to cover any visible screw holes for a cleaner finish.
Step 5: Sand Smooth
- Use sandpaper or an electric sander to smooth out all surfaces and edges.
- This is especially important if the crate will be used for kids’ toys or indoor storage.
Step 6: Paint or Stain
- Choose a finish that suits your style – bold colours for playrooms, dark stain for rustic décor or chalk paint for a vintage look.
- Apply 1-2 coats, allowing time to dry in between.
Step 7: (Optional) Add Wheels
- Turn your crate upside down and screw a castor wheel into each corner.
- Perfect for toy boxes, under-bed storage or mobile gardening tools!
You’re Done!
And just like that, you’ve built your very own wooden crate! Stack them, roll them or slide them under furniture – they’re as good-looking as they are useful.
