Common painting mistakes & solutions
Mould/Mildew
Cause: A fungus characterised by black, grey, brown or green spots usually occurs in areas of the home that does not get proper sunlight or ventilation.
Solution: Scrub the affected area away with household vinegar to kill the mould spore. Apply stain blocking primer and paint over with your desire paint colour of choice. Do not use low-quality acrylic or oil-based paint. Install an extractor fan to properly ventilate the room.
Blistering
Cause: This is when bubbles are noticeably seen on the surface of your paint job. This is caused when moisture is being brought out to the surface of your paint when a second coat of paint it applied way before the first coat has completely dried or the area is relatively moist.
Solution: Make sure your surface is dry and free from moisture before painting. Allow for adequate drying before applying multiple coats of paint.
Chalking
Cause: Low quality paints with high levels of pigment create this chalking effect
Solution:
Cracking/Crazing
Cause: This is characterised by splitting of dry paint through at least one coat. This could also be caused when the second coat of paint was not dry enough for the second application.
Solution: First scrape and sand down the surface. Apply the correct, high-quality primer coat before repainting.
Yellowing
Cause: This happens when a room is in a low-sunlight area.
Solution: Avoid oil-based or acrylic paints in these areas.
Peeling
Cause: This is a very common paint problem and caused by a loss of adhesion either from when paint is applied to a dusty/dirty wall. it can also be caused by high moisture.
Solution: Scrape the surface away from the peeling paint, smooth out the affected areas and apply a good sealer/undercoat before reapplying your original paint.
