FIVE WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR HOME’S VALUE

Upgrading your home to increase its market value may not seem like a good idea for your wallet’s sake. However, with these small but effective DIY projects, you can increase your home’s value easily and affordably.

1. Give your walls a fresh coat

If your walls have scratches and dirty paint, an outdated colour, or fading wallpaper, a little elbow grease and a few cans of paint can make a dramatic difference. To maximize the value of your home for a sale, choose a neutral colour scheme that unifies the entire house, makes space look more prominent, and appeals to a wide variety of potential buyers.

2. Install crown moulding

Putting in crown moulding is a surprisingly easy task that can add character to your rooms. Buy the moulding from your nearest hardware store, cut it to the size that fits your room and attach it to the top of the wall with a nail gun.

3. Update fixtures

Change outlet covers, curtain rods, light fixtures, and doorknobs for a small but significant interior facelift. Attractive metal outlet covers and decorative curtain rods can be a little pricier, but sometimes you can make an inexpensive one look elegant with a can of spray paint. Again, choose neutral colours to appeal to the buyer’s market.

4. Update blinds and curtains

Replace those cheap vertical plastic blinds, paper shades, or horizontal aluminium blinds with plantation shutters, wooden blinds, or drapes. Once again, stick to neutral colours.

5. Reveal and restore hardwood floors

If you do have wood floors hiding under your carpets, it’s time to start ripping out the carpets and show off that wood! You may have to refinish them to restore them to their original splendour, but it will be much less expensive than installing new flooring from scratch.
