Ceiling paints explained!

When working on any paint project especially those that require painting your ceilings, it is always a good idea to know which paints are best suited to give you your desired results.

All ceiling paints sold at your nearest DIY Depot stores are quality products. Here is a brief overview of different paint types.

  • Acrylic paint can be applied to interior or exterior surfaces such as walls and ceilings and it is suitable for application to new primed cement plaster, concrete, porous brickwork and various types of building boards. This type of paint can also be applied to suitably primed wood, metals, fibre-cement and gypsum plaster. This provides a smooth matt finish.
  • Ceiling white is a general term given to matt paint specifically designed for application to ceilings. A matt finish helps hide imperfections and it has a low spatter formula, so it’s less messy when painting overhead.
  • Emulsion is water-based paint, vinyl or acrylic resins are added to this paint to make the finish hardwearing. This results in varying degrees of sheen – generally, the shinier the finish, the tougher the paint, so these paints are often used on interior walls and ceilings.

A suggestion for paint brands – Plascon has Polvin Super Acrylic for walls and ceilings. Dulux has Acrylic PVA for wall and ceilings. Both can be found at a DIY Depot near you.
