How to renovate your bathroom on a budget

If your bathroom needs some TLC but you don’t have thousands to fork out, why not do it yourself? We’ve got some useful tips on how to renovate your bathroom on a budget. The larger sanware items such as baths, showers, toilets and basins will need to be safely removed and installed by a plumber, however the rest you can do yourself.

Cabinets – If you have old wooden cabinets, give them a new life with a fresh coat of paint, bleach or stain. Remove the cabinet doors and hinges, paint/bleach/stain and seal, then screw back in when dry. Add some new handles to update the look.

Floors: If you’ve got tiles that are outdated and won’t match your new décor, simply paint over them. Ensure that you tape off any areas that you don’t want to paint and let your paint dry completely between coats.

Walls: A fresh coat of paint with a new colour might be what your walls need. If you want something with a little more pazazz try adding in vertical wooden planks for a shiplap style (do this as a feature wall or only half way up the wall). Once your walls are dry, install your hooks and rails back in. If your walls are tiled, they can also be painted (as seen above).

Lighting: Lighting is key. Ensure that your bathroom is well lit however you don’t want to blind yourself with bright fluorescent bars. Chuck out the outdated lighting fixtures and opt for something sleek and modern. Add light strips to the bottom of your cabinets and around the back of your mirror for an even source of light. Backlit mirrors are great for doing your hair, make-up and shaving as they don’t cast any shadows.

Décor: Find a few prints of your favourite artist, frame and hang them. Add some plants for greenery, candles to set the mood and floating shelves to have easy access to your essentials.
